The energy at Meridan Hall for the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards was “that's a wrap,” as leading film producers, directors, actors and actresses celebrated the year’s best in film and television. The precursory red carpet was ravished with ensembles reflective of the multifaceted talent honoured throughout each evening. Some stars, like comedian and host of CBC Gem's Great Canadian Baking Show, Ann Pornel, stacked a Marie Antoinette wig with dessert appliqués to match a KPOP-inspired dress. While others, like Schitt’s Creek star and winner of the Academy Icon Award, Catherine O’Hara, dutifully adorned quintessential carpet glam.
O’Hara’s rouge dress from Solace London was precisely on trend for the four-day event. Perhaps red was a favoured shade for the festivities as a nod to the flag and Acer Rubrums in fall. Olunike Adeliyi, the winner of the Best Lead Performance for her remarkable role in CBC Gem’s Revenge of the Black Best Friend, was also gleaming in ruby rouge wearing a statuesque Greta Constantine gown. The crimson hue, form fit, and shoulder details evoked memories of Lupita Nyong'o's fiery 2013 Golden Globe gown by Ralph Lauren.
Suits were a theme across the red carpet for both men and women. Canada’s Drag Race host, and winner of the Best Presenter award Traci Melchor, made no mistake in letting us know that the re-emergence of the pantsuit is here to stay with her bobbin lace white set. Sports Programming Award presenter Perdita Felicien came with another spin on the pantsuit with a relaxed yet vibrant look in her neon yellow Smythe set. And Workin Mom’s star Dani Kind rocked an androgynous oversized pinstripe suit by Vetements that exuded a cool girl aesthetic.
Amongst the lavish gowns, pantsuits and tulle dresses, the men of the red carpet stood their plush ground in custom creations, hip hues, and on-point paraphernalia. Scarborough native and Brother star Lamar Johnson took home the award for Best Lead Performance in a custom Andrew Szewczyk suit–with wide pants, layered sleeves, and a sheer mesh undershirt that teased an open chest. It was a stylish look with bold gold accessories from the gold broach to the stacked rings.
From start to finish, the award show promenade was a fashion triumph, bursting with polka dots, tulle, and shimmery fringes to welcome the new Spring season.
